'I wouldn't have been successful in T20'

Mumbai: Former India batsman and well-known commentator Sanjay Manjrekar backs India to win the Asia Cup in Pakistan. Manjrekar spoke to CNN-IBN in Mumbai.

On Asia Cup

India, I believe, have to be the favourites for a while from now. Wherever they play, whichever team is involved, I think this Indian team has great self-belief, it plays cricket really well, it plays to win as a team, which is something I have always dreamt of.

Indian cricket was too much about individual performances in the 70's and the 80's, where a 100 from a Sunil Gavaskar was considered a win for Indian cricket. With this team, the transition started in mid-2000 when India wanted to win as a team. That's the expectation from the fans as well.

On too much cricket

When you know that these are not really your best players, but are playing because your best are rested, I as a viewer feel cheated. But this is demand and supply.

Viewers don't mind watching international matches without stars as well these days, so this will continue. But suddenly when they see that there is a dip in viewership because the stars are missing, that is when the scheduling will get a little more sensible.

On rotation policy

This is capitalism. As long as there is demand, there will be supply. But now it's up to the individual. The cricket board is not really playing that role. So the individuals have to decide how much cricket do they want to play. Do they want to play for a longer span and not play too many matches in a year, or play as much as possible while your career may not be long enough.

On IPL

I would not have been successful. But I would have really enjoyed being part of it, because the spectators are different. I went to 3-4 matches and the people that I saw there sitting in the stands were people I had never seen before. You sometimes recall faces who come to watch at the Wankhede, but this time these were all new faces.
