New Delhi: Bengal struggled like the Indian team on a lively Mohali wicket during the first day of the Ranji Trophy and were shot out for just 156.

Sourav Ganguly made just six as Bengal crumbled to 18 for five at one stage. Former India players Deep Dasgupta and Laxmi Ratan Shukla led the rescue act.

In reply Punjab reached 75/3 at stumps.

Former champions Karnataka were dismissed for an embarrassing 85 by Baroda. Rakesh Patel took 5/35 as only four Karnataka batsman could reach double figures.

Baroda then took the first innings lead and ended the day at 128/4.

Defending champions Uttar Pradesh did not have a great day in office as Saurashtra got over some early dismissals and posted 298 for 7. Jaydev Shah top scored with 124 while R P Singh took 2/72.

VVS Laxman made just 31 but Hyderabad rode on an unbeaten century by Anirudh Singh to end day one versus Maharshtra at 254/3.
