Bangalore: Aussie skipper Ricky Ponting set a world record by slamming his 16th Test century as captain on the opening day of the first Test match against India at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Thursday.
Ponting, who has 36 Test hundreds to his credit and is fast catching up with Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar (39), bettered the feats of his former captains Allan Border and Steve Waugh (both with 15 centuries).
Ponting came to the crease after losing opener Matthew Hayden off the third ball of the match and along with Simon Katich retrieved the situation with a 166-run second wicket partnership, which is also the best by an outstation team in Bangalore.
He completed his century with a push to point off Indian skipper Anil Kumble, which fetched him three runs soon after tea.
