He is one of the players who was a crucial part of the Indian team not so long ago. But his form has not been the best in recent times and that has seen Zaheer Khan being shown the door by the selection committee. With Champions Trophy round the corner and the pacers not firing on all the cylinders, he has a good chance to make a comeback. In an exclusive chat with CNN-IBN’s Chief Cricket Correspondent Nishant Arora, Zaheer talks about the challenges ahead.

Nishant Arora: What was Zaheer Khan before the county season and what is he now?

Zaheer Khan: Well the big difference was that it is very hectic as you play day in and day out. Probably that's what has helped me. I needed all that for my confidence. Getting wickets at the first class there was very important for my confidence.

Nishant Arora: The next challenge lies ahead and it is a huge challenge to comeback into the Indian team. Do you know how much effort it will require?

Zaheer Khan: The challenge was always there. I went to play county cricket with a frame of mind that in this season I have to perform and I have to prove to everyone that I can take wickets and claim my place in the Indian team. By performing there I have gained in confidence and at the same time has helped me realise my abilities. Challenger Series is going to be crucial. I am definitely going to give my 110 per cent in the series. Let us see how things work out.

Nishant Arora: What makes Zaheer Khan special?

Zaheer Khan: I have had enough setbacks in my career. I have taken each and every setback in my stride and looked forward and taken the positive things. I have gone back, done enough work and got back again. Performance is what is in my hand and I am going to do that.

Nishant Arora: Thanks Zaheer for speaking to CNN-IBN.
