New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified that it had recommended Mahendra Singh Dhoni for the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award well before the last date of submission of applications.

In a press release issued by its Secretary, Niranjan Shah, the BCCI said it had dispatched a letter through the postal department by 'Speed Post' on May 27 recommending Dhoni for the country’s top sports award while also forwarding the names of Chandu Borde (Dhyanchand award) and V.S. Patil (Dronacharya award).

The last date for submission of forms was May 31.

The clarification followed reports in the media that the BCCI had failed to send in the nominations in time.

No cricketer has been recommended for the Arjuna award.
