Mumbai: Zaheer Khan has got a great fillip for his outstanding performances ever since he staged a comeback. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has awarded annual retainer central contracts to as many as 33 Indian cricketers, with Zaheer getting a promotion from Grade C to Grade A.

There are no changes in the match fees for Tests (Rs 2,50,000) and one-dayers Rs (1,50,000).

The BCCI has offered a whooping retainer-ship fee of Rs 60 lakhs to Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Anil Kumble, Yuvraj Singh and Zaheer Khan, who have been bracketed in the Grade ‘A’ category.

After the World Cup debacle in the West Indies, the BCCI working committee had decided to do away with graded payment system for a flat retainer fee of Rs 5 lakhs. The Board had also proposed a performance-based contract system. Indian cricket’s graph has obviously changed since then.

Dinesh Karthik, and Rudra Pratap Singh who bowled beautifully in the series in England and was one of the architects of India’s win in the Twenty20 World Championship, are at Grade B along with Wasim Jaffer, S Sreesanth, VVS Laxman, Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag. They will receive a Rs 40-lakh retainer.

Irfan Pathan, Ajit Agarkar, Ramesh Powar, Munaf Patel, Robin Uthappa, Piyush Chawla and Suresh Raina have been drafted in Grade C for a Rs 25-lakh retainer fee.

Furthermore, the Board has announced a new base called Grade D that includes: Manoj Tiwary, Rohit Sharma, Joginder Sharma, Ishant Sharma, Ranadeb Bose, Mohammad Kaif, Cheteshwar Pujara, Parthiv Patel, S Badrinath, Aakash Chopra, Yusuf Pathan. The experienced Kaif is the odd man out. They will earn a retainer of Rs 15 lakhs.

President Sharad Pawar told the media that Grade D was aimed at nurturing new talents, who are on the fringe of making it to the Indian team, by giving them stability and financial backing. Chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar said, “They have done very well in the India A tours and we look upon them as India prospects.”

When a cricketer from Grade D plays five Tests or 15 ODIs in a season, he will qualify for Grade C.

As expected Shashank Manohar was declared the president-elect of the BCCI ahead of its 78th AGM. He will succeed Sharad Pawar after the latter takes up office as President of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 2011.

Keeping up with its constituency that the stop-gap arrangement must be from the same zone, the BCCI has nominated Chirayu Amin, president of the Baroda Cricket Association, to take charge as the Board’s interim president from July to October, 2008

Among the other decisions, former cricketer Nari Contractor has been nominated for the CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award. The award consists of a trophy, a citation and a cash prize of Rs 15 lakhs.

Meanwhile, the selectors announced that Rohit Sharma would come in place of the injured Piyush Chawla after the first one-dayer against Australia in Bangalore.
