Mumbai: With Shashank Manohar already declared the president-elect of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the only talking points at the 78th Annual General Meeting were: who would be nominated the chairman of the National Cricket Academy, and whether the Board has made any headway on the selection of the national team’s coach.

Knowing the ways of the BCCI, it comes as no surprise that the Board appointed Ravi Shastri – who is always on the fly owing to his media commitments - as the NCA chairman.

"The chairman of the NCA is not a full-time position," BCCI Treasurer N Srinivasan tired to explain, "we have a director (Shivlal Yadhav), vice-chairman and a general manager in the academy. Shastri has agreed in principle. He will come back to us in a day after reviewing his other commitments."

As its wont, the BCCI continues to fluff the task of appointing a full-time coach. The Board refused to define a time-frame for the appointment, even though India will be locked in a high-profile series against Pakistan in the next two months.

Citing President Sharad Pawar unavailability as one of the reasons for the deferral, Srinivasan said, "The meeting to decide the coach couldn’t be convened because of inconvenience. So, I am not sure when the coach will be appointed. The committee has to meet, and I am sure it will meet reasonably quickly to look at the applications and review them."

On the delay in the entire procedure he remarked, "We did not set any deadlines. You (the media) are setting deadlines."

He made clear that the delay had nothing to do with the quality of applications: "It is a question of perception and I do not want to speculate on that. But you could be rest assured that we will cast the net wide and consider more candidates."

The Board confirmed that no decision has been taken on amnesty for players who have joined the Indian Cricket League (ICL).

As per the direction of the Supreme Court the Board has constituted a Members Affiliation Committee to resolve the issue of separate voting rights for the cricket associations of Bihar and Jharkhand.

It has also ratified a policy for the Technical Committee: the candidate should have played at least 25 first-class matches.

Among the other significant decisions taken, the Association of Indian Universities, Kerala Cricket Association, Tripura Cricket Association, Maharashtra Cricket Association and Railway Sports Promotion Board would now be part of the BCCI’s Working Committee.

Since Karnataka State Cricket Association, Punjab Cricket Association, Gujarat Cricket Association and Vidarbha Cricket Association have staged Test matches, they too get into the Board’s Working Committee.

No changes were made in the All-India Senior Selection Committee (headed by Dilip Vengsarkar), the All-India Junior Selection Committee, Marketing Sub-Committee and the Media Committee.

Shashank Manohar and Lalit Modi continue to head the Tour, Programme and Fixture Committee and the Umpires Sub-Committee respectively. Manohar will also head the newly formed Women’s Committee.
