BCCI announces contracts after long wait

Mumbai: After a prolonged wait, the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Thursday announced the annual retainer contracts for the members of the Indian team.

The BCCI said in Mumbai that the contract will stand effective from October 1 to September 30, 2008 and graded the players into four categories.

India's fast bowling spearhead Zaheer Khan was promoted to Grade A, along with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, while Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Anil Kumble remained in Grade A. The players stand to earn an annual retainership of Rs 60 lakh.

Grade B included batsman VVS Laxman, Harbhajan Singh, Gautam Gambhir, Wasim Jaffer, S Sreesanth, Dinesh Karthik, RP Singh and Virender Sehwag, who will receive a Rs 40-lakh retainer.

India's comeback man Irfan Pathan, Ajit Agarkar, Ramesh Powar, Munaf Patel, Robin Uthappa, Piyush Chawla and Suresh Raina were drafted in Grade C, earning Rs 25 lakh each, while Rohit Sharma was included in Grade D, along with Joginder Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, Ishant Sharma, Ranadeb Bose, Mohammad Kaif, Parthiv Patel, S Badrinath, Akash Chopra, Yusuf Pathan, who will earn a retainer of Rs 15 lakh.

The players who have not offered a retainership but were selected to play for India in either Tests or One-Day Internationals will be placed in Grade D.

The BCCI also said that if a player from Grade D played five Tests or 15 ODIs will be taken into Grade C and will be payed the retainership on pro-rata basis.
