Vadodara: Ranji Trophy champions Delhi's coach and former India stumper Vijay Dhaiya said that injured opening batsman Aakash Chopra would bat in the second innings only if required on the fourth day (Saturday) of the five-day Irani Cup cricket match, which is precariously placed, at the Reliance Stadium on Friday.
With the match interestingly poised, victory for Delhi, who finished the day on 113 for three, still need 265 runs for victory with seven second innings wickets in tact, looks unlikely at the moment as one of their prolific scorer and skipper Virender Sehwag is back in the pavilion while the other, Chopra, is nursing an injury on his right ankle, which he sustained while chasing a dead ball.
"There is lot of swelling on his ankle and it has been bandaged heavily. But he will bat if required tomorrow," Dhaiya told reporters after the match.
Chopra, who is trying to make a comeback to Test squad, scored 42 in the first innings and if he gets a reasonable score in the second innings, he might stand a good chance of making a comeback.
However, everything is not lost for the opener as he also figures in the Board President's Eleven, which will play a practice match against the touring Aussies in Hyderabad from October 2.
